Introduction

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over damaged or decayed teeth to restore their shape, size, strength, and appearance.

They are typically made from materials like porcelain, ceramic, gold, or zirconia, and are custom-made to fit each patient’s unique needs.

Why would I need a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to protect and restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. A dentist may recommend a dental crown for several reasons, including:

  1. Protection: A dental crown can protect a weakened or damaged tooth from further damage, such as cracking or breaking.
  2. Restoration: A dental crown can restore the shape and size of a tooth that has been damaged due to decay, trauma, or wear.
  3. Support: A dental crown can provide support to a tooth that has a large filling or has undergone root canal treatment.
  4. Aesthetics: A dental crown can improve the appearance of a misshapen, discolored, or stained tooth.
  5. Bridge attachment: A dental crown can be used to anchor a dental bridge, which replaces one or more missing teeth.

Your dentist will determine if a dental crown is necessary based on your specific dental needs and concerns.

Types of Dental Crowns

The type of crown depends on an individual’s dental care needs, and the different types of dental crowns are made from different dental materials.

  1. Porcelain Crowns: Porcelain crowns are a popular choice for their natural-looking appearance and durability. They are made from a ceramic material that mimics the translucency and color of natural teeth, and can be customized to match the shape and size of your existing teeth.
  2. Ceramic Crowns: Ceramic crowns are similar to porcelain crowns in their aesthetic qualities, but are typically made from a stronger type of ceramic that is more resistant to chipping or cracking. They are also more translucent, making them a good option for front teeth that require a more natural look.
  3. Gold Crowns: Gold crowns are a long-lasting and durable option that is resistant to wear and corrosion. They are made from a mixture of gold, copper, and other metals, and can be customized to fit your teeth perfectly.
  4. Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns are a newer type of crown that offer the strength of metal crowns with the aesthetic qualities of ceramic or porcelain. They are made from a strong and durable type of ceramic called zirconia, and are particularly well-suited for molars and other teeth that experience a lot of wear and tear.
  5. Stainless Steel Crowns: Stainless steel crowns are typically used as a temporary measure for children who have decayed or damaged primary teeth. They are easy to place and remove, and can protect the tooth until it falls out naturally.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

  1. Protection of damaged teeth – Dental crowns can provide a protective layer over damaged or weakened teeth, preventing further decay or damage and preserving the natural tooth structure.
  2. Improved aesthetics – Dental crowns can also improve the appearance of a tooth, covering up discoloration, chips, or other imperfections that may be affecting your smile.
  3. Durability – Dental crowns are designed to last for many years, providing a long-term solution for damaged or decayed teeth.
  4. Comfort – Dental crowns are custom-made to fit your teeth perfectly, providing a comfortable and natural-looking solution that can improve your overall dental health and quality of life.

Preparation for Dental Crowns

  1. Consultation and evaluation: Before getting a dental crown, you will need to schedule a consultation with your dentist to determine whether a crown is the best option for your specific needs. Your dentist will evaluate the condition of your teeth and recommend the appropriate treatment plan.
  2. X-rays and impressions: Once you have decided to get a dental crown, your dentist will take X-rays and impressions of your teeth to create a custom-made crown that fits perfectly over the damaged tooth. These images will be used to design the crown and ensure that it is the right size, shape, and color for your individual needs.
  3. Tooth preparation: To prepare the damaged tooth for the crown, your dentist will need to remove any decay or damage and reshape the tooth to make room for the crown. This may involve filing down the tooth or building it up with a filling material.
  4. Temporary crown placement: While your custom-made crown is being fabricated, your dentist will place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth to protect it from further damage and to help you get used to the feel of the crown in your mouth.

Placement of Dental Crowns

  1. Removal of the temporary crown: Once your custom-made crown is ready, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and clean the tooth thoroughly in preparation for the placement of the permanent crown.
  2. Crown placement and adjustment: Your dentist will carefully place the crown over the prepared tooth, making any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit and bite. They will also check the color and appearance of the crown to make sure it matches your natural teeth.
  3. Bonding the crown: Once the crown is in the correct position, your dentist will use special dental cement to bond it to the prepared tooth. This will ensure that the crown stays securely in place and can withstand normal biting and chewing.
  4. Bite adjustment: Finally, your dentist will check your bite to make sure that the crown does not interfere with your natural bite and that it feels comfortable and natural in your mouth.

Aftercare for Dental Crowns

  1. Proper oral hygiene – To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your dental crown, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing regularly and visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
  2. Regular dental check-ups – Regular dental checkups will allow your dentist to monitor the health of your crown and make any necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure that it continues to function properly.
  3. Managing discomfort and sensitivity – Some patients may experience some discomfort or sensitivity after getting a dental crown, but this usually goes away within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers and sensitivity toothpaste can help alleviate any discomfort.
  4. Avoiding hard and sticky foods – To prevent damage to your dental crown, it is important to avoid biting down on hard objects like ice or popcorn kernels and to avoid sticky or chewy foods that can pull on the crown.

Comparison of different types of crowns

Different types of dental crowns have different costs, with porcelain and ceramic crowns generally being more expensive than metal crowns.

Payment options: Most dental practices offer a variety of payment options, including insurance, financing, and payment plans, to help make dental crowns more affordable for their patients.

Risks and Complications

  1. Sensitivity to hot and cold Some patients may experience sensitivity to hot and cold foods or beverages after getting a dental crown, but this usually goes away within a few days.
  2. Crown damage or fracture: While dental crowns are designed to be durable, they can still be damaged or fractured if exposed to excessive force, such as from biting down on hard objects.
  3. Crown loosening or falling out: In some cases, a dental crown may become loose or even fall out completely. This can occur if the cement bonding the crown to the tooth weakens over time or if the underlying tooth becomes decayed or damaged.
  4. Allergic reactions: In rare cases, some patients may have an allergic reaction to the materials used to create their dental crown, such as porcelain or metal alloys.

How long do dental crowns last?

The lifespan of dental crowns varies depending on several factors, including the material used, the amount of wear and tear, and how well you take care of your teeth and gums.

Generally, dental crowns can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years or more with proper care.

Here are some factors that can affect the longevity of dental crowns:

  1. Material: Different materials have different durability levels. For example, porcelain or ceramic crowns tend to be more fragile than metal or zirconia crowns.
  2. Location: Crowns on back teeth that undergo more chewing force may wear out faster than those on front teeth.
  3. Oral hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings can help prevent decay and gum disease, which can weaken the tooth underneath the crown.
  4. Clenching or grinding: Habits like teeth grinding or clenching can put extra pressure on the crown, leading to wear and damage.
  5. Dental trauma: An injury or accident to the tooth or crown can cause damage and affect its lifespan.

Your dentist will monitor the condition of your dental crowns during regular check-ups and may recommend replacement if they show signs of wear or damage.

It’s important to follow good oral hygiene habits and to avoid habits that can damage your dental crowns to help them last as long as possible.

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. They are typically made of materials such as porcelain or ceramic.

Dental crowns can last for many years with proper care and maintenance. On average, they can last between 10 to 15 years.

The process of getting a dental crown involves a few steps. First, the tooth will be prepared by removing any decay or damage. Then, an impression of the tooth will be taken to create the custom-made crown. A temporary crown may be placed while the permanent crown is being made. Once the permanent crown is ready, it will be cemented into place.

The cost of dental crowns in Johannesburg varies depending on factors such as the material used, the location of the dental practice, and the complexity of the case. At Hills Dental Studio, our dental crowns start from R5,500.

The different types of dental crowns include porcelain, ceramic, metal, and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best type for you will depend on your specific needs.

Dental crowns cannot be whitened with traditional teeth whitening methods. If you have discolored crowns, your dentist may recommend replacing them with new, lighter-colored crowns.

To care for your dental crowns, it is important to practice good oral hygiene habits such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash. It is also important to avoid biting down on hard or sticky foods, as this can damage the crown.

Getting a dental crown should not be painful, as your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area. However, you may experience some sensitivity or discomfort after the procedure, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

The process of getting a dental crown typically takes two to three visits to the dental practice. The first visit involves preparing the tooth and taking impressions, while the second visit involves placing the permanent crown. In some cases, same-day crowns may be available, which can be completed in a single visit.
